Intrusion Detection System Using Discrete Fourier Transform with Window Function

Abstract

An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is countermeasureagainst network attack. There are mainly two typesof detections; signature-based and anomaly-based. And thereare two kinds of error; false negative and false positive. Indevelopment of IDS, establishment of a method to reduce suchfalse is a major issue. In this paper, we propose a new anomaly-baseddetection method using Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)with window function. In our method, we assume fluctuation ofpayload in ordinary sessions as random. On the other hand, we cansee fluctuation in attack sessions have bias. From the viewpointof spectrum analysis based on such assumption, we can find outdifferent characteristic in spectrum of attack sessions. Using thecharacteristic, we can detect attack sessions. Example detectionagainst Kyoto2006+ dataset shows 12.0% of false positive at most,and 0.0% of false negative.

A Systematic Review on Machine Learning Insider Threat Detection Models, Datasets and Evaluation Metrics

Abstract

Computers are crucial instruments providing a competitive edge to organizations that have adopted them. Their pervasive presence has presented a novel challenge to information security, specifically threats emanating from privileged employees. Various solutions have been tried to address the vice, but no exhaustive solution has been found. Due to their elusive nature, proactive strategies have been proposed of which detection using Machine Learning models has been favoured. The choice of algorithm, datasets and metrics are cornerstones of model performance and hence, need to be addressed. Although multiple studies on ML for insider threat detection have been done, none has provided a comprehensive analysis of algorithms, datasets and metrics for development of Insider Threat Detection models. This study conducts a comprehensive systematic literature review using reputable databases to answer the research questions posed. Search strings, inclusion and exclusion criteria were set for eligibility of articles published in the last decade.

A Framework for Securing Email Entrances and Mitigating Phishing Impersonation Attacks

Abstract

Emails are used every day for communication, and many countries and organisations mostly use email for official communications. It is highly valued and recognised for confidential conversations and transactions in day-to-day business. The Often use of this channel and the quality of information it carries attracted cyber attackers to it. There are many existing techniques to mitigate attacks on email, however, the systems are more focused on email content and behaviour and not securing entrances to email boxes, composition, and settings. This work intends to protect users' email composition and settings to prevent attackers from using an account when it gets hacked or hijacked and stop them from setting forwarding on the victim's email account to a different account which automatically stops the user from receiving emails. A secure code is applied to the composition send button to curtail insider impersonation attack. Also, to secure open applications on public and private devices.
