End to End Quality of Service Assurance for Multi-Service Provisioning in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Prabesh Dongol and Dhadesugoor R. Vaman, Prairie View A&M University, USA

Abstract

Multimedia streaming over Mobile Ad Hoc networks has been a very challenging issue due to the dynamic behavior and uncertain nature of the channels. Transmission of real time video has bandwidth, delay and loss requirements. However there are no Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for video transmission in today’s network. There are many challenging issues that need to be addressed in designing mechanisms for video transmission, which include end-to-end Quality of Service, Bandwidth, Delay, Loss, Congestion, and Heterogeneity. The Challenges of delivering Multi-media signals are even pronounced in Wireless Networks (Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Cellular Networks) which are heavily bandwidth constrained and have no fixed infrastructures. In this Research we provide a theoretical model for minimum buffer size as a means of achieving smoother, higher quality streaming video. This Research presents a general optimal video smoothing algorithm based on the concept of dynamically controlled Coefficient of Variance (CV), which is the ratio of standard deviation of the end-to-end delay and the expected value of the delay for each ensemble of packets being transmitted through the network. The results discuss how the size of the “receive buffer” is affected by the allocated bandwidth for each source-pair end users for supporting video streaming applications without any gaps. The simulation performance show that the dynamic client buffer size based on measured bandwidth variation achieves negligible jitter in the video streaming which is subjectively acceptable.

Selective Jamming Attack Prevention Based on Packet Hiding Methods and Wormholes

Divya Ann Luke, Jayasudha. J.S, SCT College of Engineering, India

Abstract

The wireless networks are more sensitive to the Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. The existing system is based on Spread Spectrum (SS). This technique mainly focuses on an external threat model. In wireless network the communications between nodes take place through broadcast communication. That is why, if an attacker present within the network can easily eavesdrop the message sent by any node. The main attack present in the wireless network is the selective jamming attack. This type of attack mainly focuses a single node termed as target node. Attacker always tries to block the message sent by the target node. This leads to the Denial-of-Service attack. We are proposing a new method to prevent the selective jamming attack in an internal threat model.

A wormhole is used, which will generate an alarm to indicate the presence of jammer and sent IP address of jammer node to all other nodes in the network. Using a method called packet hiding, we can send message through the network even though a jammer is present. This method is based on the technique called Strong Hiding Commitment Scheme (SHCS). Here, the access point in a network region becomes the wormhole whenever it finds out any node that violates the rules in a particular network region. That node is then considered as a jammer node. The wormhole sends IP address of jammer to all other nodes. Wormhole then prevents the jamming activity of the jammer by encrypting the source ID of message along with the message packet. So that the jammer is unable to identify its target node and the source can forward its message safely through jammer node itself.

Distributed Denial of Service Attack Detection and Prevention Model for IoT based Computing Environment using Ensemble Machine Learning Approach

Nicholas Oluwole Ogini1, Wilfred Adigwe2 and Noah Oghenefego Ogwara3, 1Delta State University, Nigeria, 2Delta State University of Science and Technology, Nigeria, 3Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand

Abstract

Defending against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) in the Internet of Things (IoT) computing environment is a challenging task. DDoS attacks are type of collective attack in which attackers work together to compromise internet security and services. The resource-constrained devices used in IoT deployments have made it even easier for an attacker to break, because of the vast number of vulnerable IoT devices with significant compute power. This paper proposed an ensemble machine learning (ML) model using the bagging technique to detect and prevent DDoS attacks in the IoT computing environment. We carried out an Machine Learning experiment and evaluated our proposed model with the most recent DDoS attacks (CICDoS2019) dataset. We use seven validation metrics (classification accuracy, precision rate, recall rate, f1-score, Matthews Correlation Coefficient, false negative rate and false positive rate) to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. The results obtained in our experiment shows an improved performance with an overall maximum classification accuracy of 99.75%, precision rate of 99.99%, recall rate of 99.76%, f1-score of 99.87%, Matthews Correlation Coefficient of 0.000000214, false negative rate of 0.24% and 4.42% false positive rate.
