A New Stemmer to Improve Information Retrieval

ABSTRACT

A stemming is a technique used to reduce words to their root form, by removing derivational and inflectional affixes. The stemming is widely used in information retrieval tasks. Many researchers demonstrate that stemming improves the performance of information retrieval systems. Porter stemmer is the most common algorithm for English stemming. However, this stemming algorithm has several drawbacks, since its simple rules cannot fully describe English morphology. Errors made by this stemmer may affect the information retrieval performance.

The present paper proposes an improved version of the original Porter stemming algorithm for the English language. The proposed stemmer is evaluated using the error counting method. With this method, the performance of a stemmer is computed by calculating the number of understemming and overstemming errors. The obtained results show an improvement in stemming accuracy, compared with the original stemmer, but also compared to other stemmers such as Paice and Lovins stemmers. We prove, in addition, that the new version of porter stemmer affects the information retrieval performance.

Internal Security on an IDS Based on Agents

ABSTRACT

An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can monitor different events that may occur in a determined network or host, and which affect any network security service (confidentiality, integrity, availability). Because of this, an IDS must be flexible and it must detect and trace each alert without affecting the system´s performance. On the other hand, agents ina Multi-Agent system have inherent security problems due to their mobility; that’s why we propose some techniques in order to provide internal security for the agents belonging to the system. The deployed IDS works with a multiagent platform and each component inside the infrastructure is verified using security techniques in order to provide integrity. Likewise, the agents can specialize in order to carry out specific jobs, for example monitoring TCP, UDP traffic, etc. The IDS can work without interfering in the system's performance. In this article we present a hierarchical IDS deployment with internal security on a multiagent system, using a platform named BESA with its processes, functions and results.

Malware Risk Analysis on the Campus Network with Bayesian Belief Network

ABSTRACT

A security network management system is for providing clear guidelines on risk evaluation and assessment for enterprise networks. The threat and risk assessment is conducted to safeguard enterprise network services to maintain system confidentiality, integrity, and availability through effective control strategies. In this paper, based on our previous work in analyzing integrated information security management and malware propagation on the campus network through mathematical modelling, we proposed Bayesian Belief Network with inference level indicator to enable the decision maker to understand and provide appropriate mitigation decisions on the risks posed. We experimentally placed monitoring sensors on the campus network that gives the threat alert priority levels and magnitude on the vulnerable information assets. These methods will give a direction on the belief inferred due to malware prevalence on the information security assets for better understanding.
