A New Secret Handshakes Scheme with Dynamic Matching Based on ZSS

Preeti Kulshrestha and Arun Kumar Pal, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, India

Abstract

Balfanz et al. in 2003, introduced the primitive secret handshakes (SH) as a two party protocol together with a notion of roles and implements it using pairing based cryptography, the scheme allows two parties to make a match (authentication & verification) and derive a shared common session key if and only if they belong to same group. If the parties do not belong to the same group, they cannot make any conclusion about the veracity of other’s affiliation. Ateniese et al. in 2007 presented a SH with dynamic matching in which each party can specify both the group and the role the other must have in order to complete a successful handshake. This paper presents a new SH scheme with dynamic matching which is computationally comparable with the scheme of Ateniese et al. The proposed scheme is inspired on an identity based authenticated key agreement proposed by McCullagh et al. and uses ZSS signature. The paper also gives security proofs for the new scheme in the random oracle.

Strong Zero-Knowledge Authentication Based on the Session Keys (SASK)

Younes ASIMI, Abdellah AMGHAR, Ahmed ASIMI and Yassine SADQI, Laboratoire des Systemes informatiques et Vision (LabSiV), Morocco

Abstract

In this article, we propose a new symmetric communication system secured, founded upon strong zero knowledge authentication protocol based on session keys (SASK). The users’ authentication is done in two steps: the first is to regenerate a virtual password, and to assure the integrity and the confidentiality of nonces exchanged thanks to the symmetric encryption by a virtual password. The second is to calculate a session key shared between the client and the web server to insure the symmetric encryption by this session key. This passage allows to strengthen the process of users’ authentication, also, to evolve the process of update and to supply a secure communication channel. This evolution aims at implementing an authentication protocol with session keys able to verify the users’ identity, to create a secure communication channel, and to supply better cyber-defense against the various types of attacks.

A Countermeasure for Double Spending Attacks on Blockchain Technology in Smart Grid

Lanqin Sang and Henry Hexmoor, Southern Illinois University, USA

Abstract

As a distributed technology, blockchain has been applied in many fields. Much research has been done on its inherent security issues. Among these security issues, double spending is one of the most pernicious. Current countermeasures are not systematic, they either focus on monitoring or detection with no effective strategy to prevent future double spending. These countermeasures also have serious drawbacks, such as high network traffic, high CPU utilization, and heavy management overhead. In this paper, we present a systematic approach to address double spending attack on smart grid. A reputable node is selected, which constantly compares all transactions in current time window with previously validated block and current block. Upon discovering conflicting transactions, a warning message with the conflicting transaction and two penalty transactions are broadcasted to the network to stop the current attack and to prevent future attacks. Our experiment has demonstrated our design is highly effective to detect double spending, with short detection time and low CPU utilizations.

Cybercrime Awareness on Social Media: A Comparison Study

Wisdom Umeugo, Independent researcher, Canada

Abstract

The popularity of social media has not waned since it gained popularity in the early 2000s. Social networks such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Snapchat boast billions of active users worldwide. Social media remains an invaluable tool to both organizations and individuals because of the ease of sharing information and media and the ability to both reach and engage specific audiences of interest. Due to its massive user base, communication ease, and data sharing, social media presents fertile ground for the conduct of cybercrime. Cybercriminals actively target social media users, use social media to facilitate their cybercrime activities, and advertise their criminal activities on social media. The potential dangers of cybercrime on social media necessitate that organizations institute cybercrime on social media policies to guard against these threats and provide employees with cybercrime awareness on social media (CASM) training. CASM is important as corporate and personal use of social media becomes increasingly blurred. This study attempted to measure the CASM scores of employees in security-critical sectors and determine if hearing disability had any impact on the CASM scores. Employees of the education, finance, government, information technology, legal, medicine, military, and Policing sectors in the United States were surveyed. Results showed that the CASM score was average across all sectors. No statistically significant difference in CASM score was found between groups with and without hearing difficulties, although CASM scores were slightly lower for employees with hearing difficulties. The results suggested that more CASM training is needed for employees in the surveyed sectors.
